Coping with Perinatal Issues

You're Not Alone

“We’re having a baby!” For most couples, few words elicit as much excitement as those announcing that you’re starting a family. And for a woman, the rite of passage into motherhood is one of the most monumental life transitions that she’ll go through.

For most couples, becoming pregnant and moving well into pregnancy is a time to celebrate. However, it can come as a surprise for many women that during pregnancy or after baby is born, the elation and joy of bringing that precious life into the world can wane, and a cloud of depression and/or anxiety can loom not just for days or weeks, but much longer.

Common Symptoms of Perinatal Depression/Anxiety

  • Insomnia
  • Irritability
  • Loss of appetite
  • Overwhelming fatigue
  • Loss of interest in sex
  • Lack of joy in your life
  • Severe mood swings
  • Feelings of inadequacy
  • Scary thoughts
  • Difficulty bonding with baby
  • Withdrawal from family/friends
  • Feelings of shame and guilt

Risk Factors for Perinatal Depression/Anxiety

  • History of depression
  • Difficult breastfeeding
  • Recent stressful life events
  • Your baby has special needs
  • Problems with partner
  • Weak support system
  • Financial difficulties
  • Unplanned pregnancy

Evidence-based treatment includes a variety of approaches including cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), new mother support groups, in-home therapy, couples counseling, and infant massage. For many women, these approaches can alleviate depressive symptoms and help to improve mother/infant bonding.
